If at first…

Image
I’ve just been attempting to import some of my old photos, the first attempt using an external hard drive failed, however I’d also kept an old card reader and that method (along with me keeping all my old memory cards) actually worked!  I really thought the former method would have more chance of working, shows how much I know (the vagaries of technology.) Anyway, here’s a seasonal picture from 2009, 14 years ago almost to the day (that’s tomorrow, but I’ve already started writing this and want to publish it!)  From a technical perspective, I would think white balance is often important for such shots, but this one is nothing compared to getting purple flowers correct (I think I took a custom white balance reading from a sheet of white paper in that case.)

Make mine a double.

I think this is the only time (as far as I remember) that I’ve taken a double rainbow, in fact I didn’t even know such things (and ones with more rainbows as well) even existed until fairly recently.  Luck certainly played a part in this of course and in this exact instance, also the fact that I took nine photos in total!  This is a phone shot, sometimes you really have to react fast when an opportunity like this arises - in fact in the past I’ve totally missed some potentially great rainbow photos just by getting my camera out and turning it on.

Train (blast from the past!)

Image
This picture is definitely one of my older ones - I haven’t taken many trains for years.  In fact anyone who has reasonable knowledge of such things will recognise the outdated livery (Northern Spirit).  This does remain one of my personal favourite liveries from over the years though.  These units (Class 156 Super Sprinter) do still run around these parts (in fact in most parts of the country as far as I know.)  This was sixteen years ago so I can’t actually remember, but I must have gone back to the station from the town when I was in Grange-over-Sands that day, specially to take that shot - the train’s heading the wrong way for me to have got off it and I don’t think I’ve ever been prone to taking the risk of trying to get such a shot before I got on the train (too much danger of watching it disappear into the distance. 😁) Photographically, again I don’t have too much to say in this one (hence all my waffling above 😄) but I can say I definitely had the sun in the right place (beh

Bottlebrush Plant.

Image
This is another phone shot, from a few years ago, this time of the bottlebrush plant.  The proper name (by the wonders of Wikipedia 😛) is Callistemon.  I can’t really say that I have any particular photographic insight on this one, I think I can say this one really comes down to saying it’s just a nice bright flower!😁 Finally, it might help if I remember to put the photo on too, I nearly forgot! 😁

Town Hall.

My second photo shows what you can achieve with two ingredients, a telephoto shot from a high vantage point. This one uses telephoto compression to its advantage, the hills (which aren’t in reality all that near the building) providing an effective backdrop. The other aspect to note is the ‘layered’ look of telephoto shots, an effect which I believe is enhanced by the more distant parts looking more hazy due to vapour in the atmosphere being more apparent, another consequence of telephoto compression.

Welcome.

Welcome to my photography blog! This isn’t going to be a wordy post since I’m just getting started. Here goes, my first picture, a phone shot, which goes to show what results you can get in that way. In fact, probably by physically having the phone near the subject flower (Buddleia), I’ve even managed a degree of background blur (no mean feat with phones with their fixed aperture as I understand it.)
